Backing Services

We're happy to help you with quilt backing! You may provide your own, or we can prepare it for you.

Backing Requirements:

Your backing fabric must be 8 inches wider and longer than your quilt top.

For example, if your quilt top is 50" x 50", your backing should measure at least 58" x 58".

Batting Options

You can bring your own pieced batting (Frankenbatting) or choose from our premium Hobbs in-store selections. We offer high-quality batting options to help ensure the best finish for your quilt.

  •  Pieced Batting Guidelines:  Batting must be 8 inches longer and wider than your quilt top, just like your backing.
    • For example, if your quilt measures 50" x 50", your batting should measure at least 58" x 58".
  • Batting Available In-Store:
    • 80/20 Cotton-Poly Blend – provides durability with a soft drape and minimal shrinkage.
    • Wool Batting – warm, lightweight, and adds loft for beautiful definition.
    • Polyester
Finishing Services
  • Serged Quilt Edges (Border) – for a clean, professional finish.
  • 2" Machine Binding Service – fast, precise binding to complete your quilt.

Binding Requirements:

Binding strips should be 2 inches wide, pieced with a 45-degree seam, and left flat (not pressed in half).

To calculate the number of strips you'll need, Add the length of all four sides of your quilt and divide by 40. Then, round up to the following whole number.

Example: For a 60" x 70" quilt:

60 + 60 + 70 + 70 = 260

260 ÷ 40 = 6.5, so you'll need 7 strips cut 2" wide.

Frequently Asked Questions - Quilt Services

What type of quilting services do you offer?
We specialize in edge-to-edge longarm quilting with over 200+ digital designs. We also offer finishing services like serging the quilt edges and 2" machine binding.

Can I bring my own batting and backing?
Yes! You are welcome to bring your own pieced (Frankenbatting) batting and backing or choose from our premium Hobbs in-store selections.
Reminder: Both batting and backing should be 8 inches longer and wider than your quilt top.

What are your batting options?
We carry high-quality batting, including:
•  80/20 Cotton-Poly Blend
•  Wool Batting
•  Polyester

What size should my binding strips be?
Binding strips should be 2 inches wide, pieced together with 45-degree seams, and left flat (do not fold or press).

How do I calculate how much binding I need?
Add up the lengths of all four sides of your quilt, then divide by 40. Round up to the nearest whole number to determine how many 2" strips you'll need.
Example: A 60" x 70" quilt:
60 + 60 + 70 + 70 = 260 inches total.
260 ÷ 40 = 6.5, so plan for 7 strips.

Should I trim my quilt top or backing before bringing it in?
Please leave both your quilt top and backing untrimmed. We will make sure everything is squared up as needed.

Can I choose my thread color?
Absolutely! We use the Superior Threads—So Fine! line and offer a variety of colors.

How long does quilting take?
Turnaround times vary based on our current workload and the size of your quilt, but we will provide an estimated completion date when you drop it off.

Do I need an appointment to drop off my quilt?
No appointment is necessary, just stop by! But if you'd like to schedule a consultation to discuss patterns, thread, and options, we'd be happy to help.
