Intro to Garment Construction – Part 1 Woven Fabrics

For ages 10 to adult. (If your child wants you to accompany him or her, the adult is welcome as well.)
We will be constructing an elastic-waisted skirt or an elastic-waisted pair of shorts. We will have lots of fun!
LaDonna Tate, educator, will be at Quilters HQ on August 10, 2024, from 4:00-5:00 pm. She will help students in her upcoming class select their fabric and notions, if needed.
Added PLUS! If you bring your pattern and time permits, she will show you how to cut it out.
You will learn so many techniques in this class.
How to read and size a pattern |
How to prepare the fabric |
How to find the grain and bias of the fabric |
How to lay out the pattern and cut the fabric |
How to sew seams and finish their edges. |
How to make a waistband casing and insert elastic |
How to sew a basic seam and a French seam |
We will learn basic ironing techniques. |
Equipment – Please have supplies labeled with your name.
- Working Sewing machine, power cord, foot pedal, manual, thread, bobbins, and Size 14 needles
- Basic Sewing Supplies – scissors, measuring tape, pins, seam gauge, seam ripper, fabric-marking pencil marker, pin cushion
You will need to decide if you want to sew a pair of shorts or a skirt. Please choose from patterns:
Butterick 6531, a basic sleeping shorts pattern, available in children and adult sizes.
Simplicity 9560, a basic skirt pattern available in children sizes 3-14.
Burda 6027, a gored skirt pattern available in adult sizes 8-22.
Burda 6073, a narrow skirt pattern available in adult sizes 8-18.
Simplicity 9130, a basic flared skirt pattern available in adult sizes 20W-28W.
