Let’s get started with free motion quilting on your domestic machine. Do not let your negative Nelly keep you from giving free motion a try. Everyone has to start somewhere, and this class is a great place to begin.

You will be introduced to the basics of free motion quilting in a relaxed and encouraging setting while building skills that can grow from simple practice into more confident quilting designs.

Perfect for students who are ready to move beyond piecing and start quilting their own projects with more confidence.

What you will learn

How to deal with tension issues
Proper hand and body positioning for success
How to take a design from simple to more complex

What to bring

Sewing machine in good working order
Manual, power cord, and foot pedal
Extension table
Basic sewing supplies

Supplies to bring

Polyester 40–50 wt. thread (Glide works well)
90/14 topstitch needles
Quilt marking chalk or pen
10 crayons or colored pencils
Sketchbook (8.5 x 11) or blank paper
Quilting gloves (optional)
Two 12-inch squares of solid fabric
Two 14-inch squares of 80/20 or cotton batting
Two 14-inch squares of print or solid backing fabric

Good to know

This class is limited to 8 students.

Glide thread works well for this class.

Quilters HQ will provide irons, ironing boards, and cutting mats.
